10 Things to Do with Your Dog This Summer

things to do with your dog in the summer

The longer days are here, which means there's more time to spend outside in the sun. Summertime fun isn't just for humans—chances are, your pets would love to be included in your plans! Whether you want to stick close to home or explore somewhere new, this post covers fun things to do with your dog this summer and some important safety tips for your furry friends.

1. Explore a new hiking trail.

Hiking is not only great for your physical and mental health, but it's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with your dog. Use an app like AllTrails to find hiking trails near you. You can also note the difficulty level of the hikes and see photos and reviews from recent hikers. Be mindful of your dog's physical capabilities and the trail rules regarding dogs before starting a new hike.

2. Visit a farmer's market.

Checking out your local farmer's markets supports small business owners in your area, and it can be a fun social outing for your dog! If you're located in North Carolina, be sure to follow me on Instagram to see my Simply American Dog Treat Truck market schedule and say hi in person.

3. Have a beach or lake day.

If you have a water-loving dog, take them to your local beach or lake! Whether it's a large, popular beach or a smaller more secluded spot, you and your dog will enjoy the time in the sun and being by the water.

4. Go a dog park.

Dog parks are free enrichment for your dog and free entertainment for you! There's nothing better than watching your dog having fun and socializing with other pets. A quick Google search will reveal dog parks in your area, and there may be one closer than you think!

5. Spend an afternoon at a brewery.

Catching up with friends at a local brewery? Bring your dog along for the day! Breweries are often dog-friendly establishments. Check out their rules, as this may vary depending on the place and whether or not they serve food. Be prepared to sit outside, if needed.

6. Take a road trip somewhere new.

Road trips don't have to be expensive or far to be a worthwhile experience. Even just a one-day road trip can be a memorable thing to do with your dog this summer. Explore a town in your state you've always wanted to visit. Check out and support its small businesses, and explore with your dog by your side.

7. Go camping.

For the nature-loving dogs (and humans!), camping is a classic summertime activity. Find a state park near you that's dog-friendly, pack your tent and supplies, and enjoy a relaxing weekend in nature.

8. Play in the sprinkler.

Some dogs love the water, but you may not have access to a pool or beach. Bring the water to them with a sprinkler! Not only will this help your dog stay cool in the heat, but it also will provide them (and you) with entertainment and enrichment during the warmer months.

9. Have a picnic.

Pack a blanket, some snacks for you and treats for your dog, and head to a nearby park for a picnic! This is another inexpensive thing to do with your dog this summer, and it's a nice way to spend the day. Don't forget to invite your friends and their pets to join in on the fun!

10. Watch the sunset.

Studies show that dogs love being outside and may even experience an awe for nature. Whether or not that's true, they sure do appreciate time with their humans. Prioritize slowing down and watching the sunset with your dog this summer. It's not only good for your mental health, but this is special time for you to spend together.

Reminders for Dog Safety in the Summer

I hope this list of things to do with your dog this summer inspired and excited you to schedule some of these activities on your calendar. Because many of these recommendations take place outside, it's important to be mindful of these dog safety reminders for the hot months.

Have fresh water available and stay inside during the heat of the day.

Be sure that your dog has fresh water available all the time, and especially if you'll be outside in the sun. Keep water cool in a thermos, and bring water dishes with you. These collapsable water dishes are perfect for a day at the beach or on the hiking trails.

Check that establishments are dog friendly.

Before bringing your dog into a new place, double check that the establishment is dog friendly. You may be able to find this information on their website, but if not, a quick phone call should answer your questions.

Don't leave dogs alone in your vehicle, even for a short amount of time.

Cars can got dangerously hot very quickly in the summer, so err on the side of caution and don't leave your dogs alone in your vehicle. It's better to bring them with you or leave the AC on with someone in the car than to leave them alone.

I hope this post inspired you to add some new things to do with your dog to your summer bucket list this year! Remember to stay safe, stay cool, and have fun with your furry friends. And grab them a bag of something yummy like our all-natural Chicken Bites or Pork Bites—they deserve it!
